A lifelong educator and public servant, Catherine Alvarez has fought for positive change and reform for families and children regardless of their circumstances, situations, or income level.
Born and raised in Brownsville, TX, Catherine has been a biology teacher at her former high school for the past eight years, where her involvement in school administration helped to get four School Board members elected in 2020. Before returning to Brownsville, Catherine was Assistant Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Education for the Obama Administration for six years. She helped push efforts to reform elementary school education in low-to-middle-income communities.
Katherine resides with her two adopted children, serves on the Board of Directors at Nuestra Casa, and enjoys spending her free time sailing and running.
I believe Congress must push for legislation that prevents tragedies from happening while still preserving the right for Americans to lawfully possess firearms for personal protection and sport. No parent should experience the devastating, preventable loss of a child as a result of the failure to enact sensible laws around gun safety and accessibility.
The state of Texas has helped to turn America into an economic superpower, but for too many hardworking Texans they aren't seeing the fruit of the labor reflected in their personal lives. I will fight for a raise in wages and benefits for families in all towns and suburbs to ensure the quality of life in our great communities is protected.
Protecting our natural resources and fighting for the sustainability of our environment is vital for current and future generations. Our children's futures are too important to leave to fate and environmental stewardship should be an ongoing responsibility of legislators to protect.
